The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games will unite the world through sports, celebrating the abilities and accomplishments of people with intellectual disabilities and forming a new global vision of acceptance and mutual respect.
The competition will be held February 7-13, 2009 in Boise, Idaho and will include nearly 3,000 athletes and 6,000 volunteers from 100 countries, making it the largest outdoor sporting event to be held in 2009.
Special Olympics athletes of all abilities will compete in seven different Olympic-type sports: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Floor Hockey, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing and Speed Skating.
On January 29, 2008, Special Olympics Indiana learned it will be sending five Athletes to the 2009 World Winter Games.
- 1 Male Snowshoer = Bobby Hilbert, Clark County
- 1 Female Snowshoer = Ramona Smith, Delaware County
- 1 Female Alpine Skier = Sandi Thomas, Delaware County
- 1 Male Speed Skater = Randy Hurt, Marion County
- 1 Female Figure Skater = Katrina Stamper, Johnson County
These Hoosiers will join approximately 400 athletes from across the country as members of Team USA. The Team USA delegation will attending training camp at Copper Mountain, Colorado on December 3-7.
