Healthy Athletes - Special Smiles

Special Olympics Special Smiles is a dental screening, education and referral program that seeks to increase access to dental care for Special Olympics athletes and all people with intellectual disabilities.  Dental screenings are used as a means to increase awareness of the state of oral health for Special Olympics athletes, providing awareness for athletes, their parents, caregivers and policymakers.

At a Special Olympics Special Smiles event, athletes receive:

  • Oral screenings;
  • Oral health education;
  • Individually fitted sports mouth guards, if needed;
  • Oral health education and persona preventive products; and
  • Information concering needed follow-up care by community-based dentists and educaitonal institutions.

Our Clinical Director is Dr. Karen Yoder from Indiana University School of Dentistry.
